The Laboratory

About us

Created in 1978, the Telecommunications Laboratory (LabTel) is a laboratory with lines of research in Telecommunications and Information Technology, linked to the Graduate Program in Electrical Engineering at the Federal University of Espírito Santo (Ufes). LabTel also has two laboratories, one dedicated to computer simulation in optical communications and the other exclusively for carrying out experimental work.

The work team is made up of undergraduate and graduate students. The participation of students at different academic levels dynamizes the production of scientific and technological works, in addition to bringing Scientific Initiation (CI) students closer to master’s and doctoral students.

The laboratory also has an international presence, with partnerships and collaborations with researchers from countries such as Portugal, Spain, France, Canada, Colombia, the Netherlands and many others. In Brazil, LabTel has projects with several institutions, and since 2021 it has been part of the National Network of Photonics Laboratories (Sisfóton-MCTI). These partnerships stimulate technological development, innovation and scientific production, contributing to universal access to advanced infrastructure for research, teaching and extension in the country.

LabTel's History

1978

On November 28, 1978, the Telecommunications Laboratory (LabTel) was created at the Federal University of Espírito Santo (Ufes). Linked to the Graduate Program in Electrical Engineering (PPGE), the initial objective of the Laboratory was to carry out research in the areas of applied electromagnetism, telephony and radio propagation.

1991

The Laboratory becomes the research environment of the newly created Master's Program in Electrical Engineering at Ufes.

1997

After the success of new entrants to the Master's Program, the Doctoral Program was instituted and, in this way, the Laboratory began to receive more students and extended its research activities to the area of Optical Communications.

1999

LabTel grows in developed projects and starts to organize nationally and internationally renowned events, such as the Brazilian Telecommunications Symposium (SBT), in 1999.

2009

Seeking improvement and approximation between the different projects carried out by the laboratory, LabTel participated in a training project of the Center for Excellence in Photonics in Communication of Espírito Santo (NEFCES). The balance was positive, and as a result of the training, LabTel found, internally, a substantial advance in the capacity to carry out experimental work. This project provided greater interaction with employees from other Higher Education Institutions in the State.

2010

In 2010, LabTel participated in one of the most important technical-scientific events in Brazil, MOMAG. MOMAG is a biennial event promoted by the Brazilian Society of Microwaves and Optoelectronics (SBMO) and the Brazilian Society of Electromagnetism (SBMag).

2012

LabTel has a new home. With the growth of the team and the approval of new projects, it became necessary to expand the physical structure of LabTel, moving the Laboratory to the Postgraduate building of the Technological Center (CT-VI), at Ufes. The change further strengthened the Laboratory, which now had a more adequate infrastructure for the development of modeling and simulation of components, systems and networks, as well as fiber device applications involving optical sensing. 2012 was also the year that marked the first international event organized by the group, WORKINOVA: Denmark-South America Workshop on Sustainable Technologies, Research and Innovation.

2013

The year that marked a new phase at LabTel. With the beginning of research projects involving the development of prototypes and the participation of business teams following the progress and the results presented, LabTel grew and advanced in scientific production. Currently, the support of a technical and administrative team is essential for the operation of the Laboratory.

2014

LabTel participates in the worldwide commemoration of the 10th anniversary of the creation of the Arduino platform. At Ufes, the Laboratory promoted Arduino Day, an event that featured a cycle of lectures, workshops and exhibition of projects that use the platform.

2015

It was in 2015 that LabTel participated in the organization of one of the most important national scientific events on computer networks and distributed systems: The Brazilian Symposium on Computer Networks and Distributed Systems (SBRC), held in Vitória, Espírito Santo.

2016

LabTel is also a partner of the Center for Studies in Software-Defined Networks (Nerds), linked to the Graduate Program in Informatics (PPGI) and active in the area of optical networks. With the collaboration, it was possible to advance in datacenter assemblies, software-defined networks and the possibility of new experimental realizations.

2017

The Ufes Telecommunications Laboratory collaborates with the Pro-Africa Innovation, Development and Research Center (NIDA), with the objective of developing and contributing to the implementation of innovative technologies on the African continent.

2018

Year that LabTel completed 40 years of existence. Throughout this time, we overcame obstacles, overcame numerous challenges and gained international recognition. LabTel thanks everyone who made a difference and contributed to this extraordinary success, long live our Laboratory!

2019

In partnership with the Instituto de Telecomunicações de Portugal, LabTel organizes, in Aveiro (Portugal), the XVIII IMOC - International Microwave and Optoelectronics Conference, a biennial event on microwaves in optoelectronics.

2020

During the Covid-19 pandemic, LabTel professionals worked in the production of hospital and biosafety equipment, such as face shields and gel alcohol to fight the disease. In 2020, the Laboratory also promoted, in partnership with NIC Chile Research Labs (Chile), the School on Systems and Networks (SSN 2020), a remote meeting of Latin American students focused on internet and technology.

2021

LabTel is one of 11 laboratories selected to be part of the National System of Photonics Laboratories (Sisfóton). An initiative of the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq), the Sisfóton Network is one of the main strategic and structuring actions to promote technological advances in photonics in Brazil.
