Who We Are
Created in the year of 1978, the Telecommunications Laboratory (LabTel) is a lab attatched to the Eletrical Engineering Post-Graduate Program (PPGEE), of the Eletrical Engineering Department, located at the Tecnological Center at the Universidade Federal do Espírito Santo (UFES). It’s research lines are Telecommunications and Information Tecnology. Besides, LabTel has two laboratories, one dedicated to computational simulation of optical communications and other exclusive to experimental works.
The team is made by students since graduation, going to masters, doctorate degree and post-doctorate. LabTel’s post-docs have as objective act in the works orientation and accomplishment in a way that approaches the students from Scientific Research (graduates) to the ones from Masters and Doctorates (Post-Graduates) and, in this way, invigorate the scientific and tecnologic works accomplishment.
The lab also has a notable international insertion, with effective partnerships and diverse collaborations, in instance, with researchers from countries like Portugal, Spain, France, Canada, Denmark and many colaborators from brazilian institutions. Soon, the contributions should extend to south american researchers, where these activities are less prominent. The objective is learning new ways of problem solving and reach a development international standard in our activities. This vision applies in Teaching, Research and Extension.
November 28th, 1978
In this date, the Telecommunications Laboratory (LabTel) is created, at the Universidade Federal do Espírito Santo (UFES). The lab is part of the Eletrical Engineering Post-Graduate Program (PPGEE) of the University.
Initially, the objective was accompliosh researches in the areas of applied electromagnetism, telephony e radiopropagation.
The lab becomes a research environment of the newly created UFES's Eletrical Engineering Masters Program.
After the Masters Program success, the Doctorates Program was instituted and, in this way, LabTel received more students and extended its research activities to the Optical Communications area.
With the growing of developed projects, the lab begins to organize national and international renown events, such as the Brazilian Telecommunications Symposium (SBT) of the same year.
Trying to approach the works made in the lab, the Espírito Santo's Communications Photonic Excellence Core (NEFCES) formation project was elaborate. In this point, there was a substantial advance in the lab's experimental works accomplishment capacity. This project still provided a bigger interaction with collaborators from other Higher Education Institutions (IES).
In this year, LabTel organized one of Brazil's most important technical-scientific events: MOMAG. MOMAG is a biennial event promoted by the Microwave and Optoelectronics Brazilian Society (SBMO) and by the Electromagnetism Brazilian Society (SBMag). In this year, the event joined the 14th SBMO - Microwave and Optoelectronics Brazilian Symposium and the 9th Electromagnetism Brazilian Congress.
Through the approval of new projects and the entrance of new students, an structural enlargment of LabTel was necessary, changing it to the Post-Doctorate building in UFES' Technological Center. Today, the lab has an proper environment to model development and the simulation of components, systems and networks, despite the applications of fiber devices involving optical sensors.
And, in the end of the year, there was the WORKINOVA: Denmark-South America Workshop about Susteinable Technologies, Research and Inovation, the first international event organized by the group.
With the beggining of research projects involving prototype development and the active participation business teams accompanying the development and the presented results, and a new stage began at LabTel. In this period, the team's organization grew and, in this way, it began to be essential to continue and advance and obtain the expected scientif production. Currently, the technical and administrative support an important area in LabTel.
LabTel participates in the world celebration of the 10 years of the creation of the Arduino platform, promoting the Arduino Day at UFES. The event had lecture series, student focused workshops and exposition of projects that use the platform.
In this year, LabTel participates in the organization of the most important national scientific event about computer networks and distributed systems, and one of the most crowded in the Computer Science area: the Computer Networks and Distributed Systems Brazilian Sympsium (SBRC), that happened in Vitória.
LabTel makes a collaboration with the Software Defined Networks Studies Core (NERDS), attached to the Informatics Post-Graduate Program (PPGI) and actor in the optical networks area, that allowed to extend assemblies involving themes such as datacenters, software defined networks and the possibility of experimental accomplishments.
In the same way, the Pro-Africa Inovation, Development and Research Core (NIDA) also is a LabTel collaborator, having as an objective develop, accompany, contribute and help in the implementation of inovative technologies in the african continent and, in this way, share with our african partners the vast knowledge acquired in their formations (Graduate and Post-Graduate) made in Brazil .
In 2018, LabTel completed 40 years. Throughout all this time, we overcame many obstacles and challenges, gaining international recognition.
